I've used shields as the shape since we are talking about defense. Arms and badges may be displayed on any shape we desire, it's simply typical that arms are displayed on escutcheons and badges on roundels. Since we are talking about defense, a shield shape seems more appropriate. This is extremely simple; the black background stands for the presumably black baldric or tabard or whatever will be used for display.
